A new version of macOS is out today. Well, okay, not exactly a new version. Enter macintosh.js -- a version of Mac OS 8 "written entirely in JavaScript." Developed by Felix Rieseberg of Slack, the OS runs "in an Electron app pretending to be a 1991 Macintosh Quadra," and it's free to download on Github now for Mac, Linux, and Windows.
Per Riesberger, the project is "a quick and easy way to experience a bit of nostalgia if you're not trying to do anything serious with it." To that end, it comes with a few games and demos pre-installed -- among them Duke Nukem 3D, Dungeons & Dragons, and yes, Oregon Trail. Because the internet works so differently now (Mac OS 8 was released in 1997), there's no internet access from within the app. But Riesberger has included a couple of contemporary browsers for curiosity's sake.
Enjoy!
